UPDATE 28 JUNE '09: This event has been moved to the Dunedin Community Gallery across the road from Subway- close to the Octagon. To mark the 40th anniversary of New York's Stonewall Riots, members of Dunedin's LGBT community will be gathering in the Octagon on Sunday 28 June for a few hours of fun, music, and reflection. Planned for Midday until 3pm, Stonewall Dunedin will be a family-friendly afternoon," with co-organiser Phillippa at OUSA Queer Support saying "all are invited. The more people the better. So please bring friends and whanau to celebrate this important event!" The Stonewall Riots were pivotal to the Gay Liberation Movement, engendering a sense of community for queer individuals and providing impetus for the pursuit of legal recognition and equality," explains Dunedin's Queer Pride group. "They remind us that we all deserve dignity and respect as individuals, regardless of our gender identity or sexual orientation." The event will not only a celebration of the advancements that have been made for the queer community since Stonewall, explains Queer Pride. "It is also conducive to thinking about the ways in which certain individuals and groups are still discriminated against and renewing our commitment to fight for social justice, fairness and inclusion."
