Sat 13 Jun 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

11.00PM: The Mt Albert electorate has this evening voted in an MP who says he intends meeting with LGBT people on a regular basis and who supports the proposed retooling of the law allowing 'gay panic' defence. Victory: David Shearer On provisional figures Labour's David Shearer romped home with 12,613 votes, trouncing his nearest competitors, National's Melissa Lee (3426 votes) and the Greens' Russel Norman (2418). A small number of special votes are yet to be counted but cannot substantively affect the result. Less that half of eligable voters turned out to vote. Shearer will replace staunchly LGBT-positive ex-Prime Minister Helen Clark as the suburban Auckland electorate's parliamentary representative.
