Shortland Street's mad lesbian will stay on

Mon 8 Jun 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Actress Anna Julienne has signaled that the long-serving lesbian character she plays on TV2's nightly drama Shortland Street will be staying around, despite recent tumultuous storylines which have left the cursed nurse in a psychiatric unit. Mad murderer Maia: Anna Julienne as Maia Jeffries "I'm staying on, I'm still working," she said this morning on TV One's Good Morning show, adding that her character Maia Jeffries' recent harrowing scenes in the psych ward were "full-on, emotional days, and you go into a dark place. You get home and you're emotionally quite exhausted." Julienne's character Maia has had many ups and downs since joining the show in 2004. Her civil union on Valentine's Day 2006 with bar manager Jay Copeland attracted over half a million viewers, but Jay was found dead the following year - a victim of Shortland Street's serial killer. With the help of a sperm donor, Maia gave birth to a baby boy later in 2007. Recently she was revealed as the shoot-to-kill murderer of the villainous Ethan Pierce, and her guilt over the incident led her to become mentally unstable and be sectioned by her family. Julienne, who is currently planning her real-life wedding, says she's still happy to be with Shortland Street, but doubts Maia will find love or luck anytime soon. "It's hard enough to find a partner in Ferndale (Shortland Street's fictional home), there are not many lesbians," she laughs. "Solo mother, Killer psych ward… I don't know who she is going to be with, I just think she's doomed, really, isn't she?" Watch video of Anna Julienne's Good Morning interview on the link below.
