Mon 8 Jun 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News

As she hands her Miss Drag Waikato title over, Hamilton's Fucshia Fucada - also known as Steven Cartan - has had star treatment in the local newspaper. Drag fame: Fucshia Fucada The Waikato Times' Diary of a Drag Queen feature took up a whole page of the paper with photos of Cartan's transformation into Fucada, and a slideshow of images along with audio interview with Cartan has been on the front page of popular news website Stuff.co.nz. Cartan opened up about being a drag entertainer in the video slideshow online. "For me, it is the ability to escape from whatever character you might feel you are trapped in," he explained. "While you're in drag, you can take on as many characters as you please, you can enjoy whatever environment you're in, and it's always so much fun adapting." He tells GayNZ.com he's really happy with the photos and article. "They did a really good job. It's great for people to see the Hamilton gay community still going strong, and Fucshia Fucada will be sticking around for quite some time yet." Fucada handed over her Miss Drag Waikato crown to up-and-coming diva Krystal Meth at Hamilton's Shine nightclub over Queen's Birthday weekend. A selection of videos from the night are available here, and shown below is the on-stage moment when the winner was revealed.
