MP retracts call to brand people with HIV

Mon 1 Jun 2009 In: International News

A member of the Swaziland parliament has apologised after calling for all people with HIV to be branded on the buttocks. Swaziland, a landlocked Africn country, has the highest proportion of people living with HIV in the world, with 43% believed to have the virus. Timothy Myeni, an evangelical Christian and sometime gospel singer, says he now withdraws the suggestion, saying he has come to realise it was a "bad" thing to say. Myeni's suggestion was denounced as discriminatory by Swaziland HIV activists.
