Mimi Boyz is the Queen of all Queens!

Mon 1 Jun 2009 In: Hall of Fame View at NDHA

Mimi Boyz - A.K.A. 19-year-old Reece Pomana - wowed the crowd at K' Road's Family bar on Queen's Birthday Weekend with her revealing show and won their glam drag contest Queen of all Queens! We got to know Mimi more intimately… Sisters: Mimi with Family's Queen of all Queens showgirls GayNZ.com: Congrats on winning the Queen of all Queens contest! What did you do on stage to win? Mimi Boyz: When I was told about the competition I thought it was a camp idea to get my friends who have never performed before on the stage for the first time. So we all put our heads together and worked out a great show. And I took all my clothes off and glued some sequins to my genitals… Who are your drag 'mothers', and which famous drag queens inspire you? Relaxing with Mimi My Drag Mother is Ling Ling from Caluzzi and my grandmother is Fonda Boys from Finale Cabaret. My biggest inspiration has to be Tess Tickle. She is absolutely incredible and such an amazing performer. Another would have to be Ru-Paul as she is absolutely beautiful. What do you do for a job during the week? I could lie and tell you I'm a butch mechanic who drinks beer and make armpit fart sounds with my mates but I'm totally more camp then that. I work in a call centre for the Regional Council and enjoy the fact that when I go to work, I can just blend in. What's your background, and where did you grew up? I'm originally from Taranaki on the West Coast and I moved to Auckland in 2007 to attend performing art school. I grew up as a little boy in a small town called Stratford which would be smaller than Grey Lynn with me, my three brothers and my parents. When did you come out as gay, and what was that like for you at the time? I came out to my parents at 17 when I decided to move to Auckland. I remember walking into the living room where my parents and my brother were sitting and just telling my mum that I didn't like girls. She just laughed and said "So?" My father then replied "Well I'm not going to get any grand kids out of you". My family are very open and supporting and they embraced my coming out. They mean the absolute world to me. What's your relationship status? I'm a single lady boy so of course I'm single! (laughs) What do you think are the most pressing issues currently facing the NZ's LGBT community? Unsafe Sex. This current problem we had with the "HIV Predator" was absolutely heart-breaking to hear about. I have friends that are Positive and to know that they have this death sentence is horrible. But to know that someone is out there having unsafe sex knowing that they are carrying the virus was disgusting. It's a very touchy subject for me but I'm glad that this man has been stopped and everyone he's hurt can breathe a sigh of relief. What's your worst habit? I'm a filthy smoker. Its definitely something I need to give up but I'm really just too lazy and can't handle the jandle. (laughs) Other then that I don't think I have to many bad habits, other than snoring, apparently! Your biggest fear? Mimi (right) with the Single Lady-Boys Having my tuck pop out! You don't know how often I have thought about how funny it would be to just be doing a really beautiful show in a sex revealing outfit and then... something falls out. It would definitely be a show to remember I must say! Your favourite music at the moment? I love hip hop and RnB. But if the song is catchy and has good lyrics then flat out! Any books or magazines you're reading and recommending? Twilight. I don't often read but I had to stop and read this and I absolutely loved it! I definitely recommend it and I've read it about eight times. Your favourite movies? Oh so many, I love Sister Act! All the dance movies like Honey and Step Up and You Got Served! I love Fighting Temptations but mainly because I'm a Beyonce fanatic! Your favourite TV programmes? I don't really get the chance to watch TV but I did watch Satisfaction and I loved it! Now if brothels in NZ were really like that, then I would have to change my career. Your favourite websites? Of course GayNZ.com! Facebook, YouTube and I like Perez Hilton because he's so fagalicious. If you could have one wish granted what would it be? To perform as back-up dancer with Beyonce! Oh I would absolutely love that! Who are your LGBT heroes? Tess Tickle and Buckwheat as they are the most caring people in the whole world. Carmen Rupe as she has done so much for the gay community and if it wasn't for her then I wouldn't have had the chance to stand naked at Family! And I would have to admit, Ribena really has done a lot to help the new drag queens get started so she has a special place in my heart. What's coming up in the near future for you? I have no idea. I like to take it as it comes. I have plans for some new shows but you're just going to have to wait and find out. xxx     See Mimi Boyz' fierce and revealing shows at Family bar on Queen's Birthday Weekend below…     Matt Akersten - 1st June 2009
