Chch's LGBT art show proves popular

Artworks from a range of LGBT artists at a central Christchurch gallery have led to a constant flow of people through the doors of High Street's QuiqCorp Creative Experience. Saul Johns' Figure QuiqCorp's designer Mike Coker says the Queer Takes art show, which finishes this Friday 29 May, has been a successful experiment the gallery would consider repeating. One artwork, Saul John's Figure (pictured) has been sold for $600, and there has been interest in purchasing several others. The overt sexual nature of one of the artworks means it was removed from display. Andy Leleisi'uao's Pull painting is being stored in the gallery's office, and is available to view on request. Some members of the Christchurch community have contacted GayNZ.com to share their outrage at the painting 'censorship', including lesbian Cantabrian Pauline Hampton. "This exhibition is supposed to be an expression of our lives," she explained, adding: "I don't care if it's cocks or what– who do they think they are, pulling any of it off the wall?" More photos from the Queer Takes exhibition can be viewed here.
