Church of Scotland backs gay appointment

Sun 24 May 2009 In: International News View at Wayback

The Church of Scotland has backed the appointment of an openly gay minister who had the support of the majority of the congregation at Queen's Cross in Aberdeen. The appointment has sparked strong protest from traditionalist members of the Presbyterian-style church which is the official 'kirk' of Scotland. More than 12,000 Christians from as far afield as Africa and the USA signed an online petition against the appointment.   The Reverend Scott Rennie, 37, says of his appointment that there are "many" gay ministers in the Church and rejects claims that his homosexuality contradicts bible teachings."
