Openly-gay playwright Alan Bennett's six-time Tony Award-winning play The History Boys has been announced for Auckland's Maidment Theatre stage in October. History boy: Harry McNaughton The play was a hit in Broadway and London's West End before it was filmed in 2006, and was staged in Christchurch last year to enthusiastic reviews. Its plot deals with teaching methods in an all-boy grammar school, and the homosexuality of a teacher and a student. The Maidment Theatre's production will be directed by Jesse Peach and will star George Henare OBE, Annie Whittle and Shortland Street hunk Harry McNaughton. "In The History Boys, Alan Bennett evokes the special period and place that the sixth form represents in an English boy's life," says the Maidment Theatre. "In doing so, he raises - with gentle wit and pitch-perfect command of character - not only universal questions about the nature of history and how it is taught but also questions about the purpose of education today." The History Boys will be on stage from Thursday 8 until Saturday 24 October. The trailer of the movie version appears below.
