Maori TV 'Aunties' want to help Takataapui

Tue 28 Apr 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A new show planned for Maori Television needs a young Takatapui person who would benefit from having some 'Aunties' move in and help heal their family. TV researcher Ramon Te Wake says each episode of the upcoming show would show a family having some kind of trouble which the 'Aunties' step in and help sort out. "Think The Nanny but with Aunties instead," she explains. "Essentially, we are looking for a Takataapui person who is having trouble with their family accepting who they are. The Aunties step in and help bridge the gap, bringing them closer using some Auntie methods, ultimately healing the family. It's like an 'intervention' of sorts." Te Wake hopes to find a family that is willing to be filmed and be a inspiration to other families that might be in a similar situation. "Whether they have just come out, are already out, or have been out for a long time, it doesn't matter. Age is not an issue and there is a koha available."
