Priscilla profits offset theatre flops

Thu 23 Apr 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Auckland City raised over $1 million profit from Priscilla, Queen of the Desert at The Civic last year, but since those drag dollars stopped rolling in, other productions have lost $2.5 million. Don't Leave Me This Way: Priscilla stars shone at Civic Priscilla broke the box-office record for the most successful live musical staged in New Zealand during a six week period, after selling a staggering 104,000 tickets. But three low-attended productions this year including My Fair Lady - which closed two weeks early due to poor ticket sales - mean Auckland City Council now needs to bail out the entertainment venue to the tune of $1.1 million, reports the NZ Herald. The Paris Opera Ballet, planned for July, has now been cancelled.
