Amnesty to protest gay killings in Iraq

Tue 14 Apr 2009 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Amnesty International is to demand urgent and concerted action by the US-backed Iraqi government in the face of the killing of an estimated 25 young gay Iraqi men. Iraq's leaders have been accused of turning a blind eye to the deaths, perpetrated by death squads and relatives of the victims stirred up by religious leaders condemning 'deviancy' and calling for homosexuality to be eliminated from the country. Most of the deaths have occurred in the Shiite militia-controlled Baghdad suburb of Sadr City, but murders of gay men and youths have been reported in Basra, Najaf and Kerbala.
