A Polish politician has criticised his local zoo for buying an elephant who appears to have homosexual tendencies. "We didn't pay 37 million zlotys (almost 4 million New Zealand dollars) for the largest elephant house in Europe to have a gay elephant live there," said Michal Grzes, a conservative councilor in western Poland, according to Reuters. The elephant prefers male companions and is unlikely to breed with females, according to the report. "We were supposed to have a herd, but as Ninio prefers male friends over females how will he produce offspring?" But at the tender age of 10 years old, Ninio is not sexually mature yet - elephants reach adulthood at around 14 years of age. 'Gay' animals are also proving to be a problem for breeding programmes elsewhere. A UK-based breeding programme for the rare New Zealand Blue Duck went awry last month, as the two male ducks living in West Sussex have coupled up with each other, and are ignoring the female duck.
