International Gay Appreciation weekends at K' Road's Rock 'n' Bull bar are a great way for visitors and new Aucklanders to be introduced into the gay scene, says manager Susan Stevens. "The staff call me 'mum'": Susan Stevens (left) The new idea, happening on the first weekend of each month at the bar, which is located just next door to Family nightclub, is a late-night social meet-up with drink specials - and stripper shows at 2am. The Rock 'n' Bull is also a gay-friendly place at any time, says Stevens, who has worked in the gay scene as far back as Alfie's bar in the 1970's and the Staircase in the 1980's. "Everyone who comes in here is part of the family," she explains, "and the staff and regulars here just call me 'mum'". Stevens realises new people are sometimes nervous when approaching a gay venue for the first time, but says you're always sure of a warm welcome and relaxed conversation at her venue.
