Emissions from the Brionosphere

Sat 14 May 2005 In: Comment

As Garnet Milne's latest loopy outburst has been adequately covered, I thought I'd note down Destiny New Zealand's rant about the iniquity of civil unions. In the Brionosphere, that rarified area of hot air that Destiny Church members inhabit, we learn that the Civil Union Bill was enacted overnight. Well, no, try five months or so. And how many times do we have to tell them - the Civil Union Act does not change the fact that the Marriage Act 1955 stil reserves marriage for heterosexual couples. It just gives people a new relationship recognition choice, that's all. And insofar as 'extreme minorities' go, I'd be careful if I were them. I wonder if they can tell me why the rest of the country got scared at their testosterone-fuelled, black-shirted goosestep in Wellington last August? Or why even some evangelicals and fundamentalists get concerned at their antics? Insofar as broken families go, perhaps they should have thought about that before hiring a certain former Elim Church minister as director of the Destiny Training Institute after he left the sect because of his own marital infidelity? Moreover, Mr Lewis needs to ask himself how many of the anti-CUA submissions were meaningless biblical proof text citations, rants with no real corroborative evidence, or cribbed from disproven US Christian Right junk science sources. Moreover, Destiny Church and its puppet party didn't even bother to make a parliamentary submission, so they can talk. Furthermore, can Lewis tell me about how exactly a civil union imposes 'special rights' for lesbians, gay men and trans New Zealanders who want to use that relationship option? Civil unions do not confer special rights, as they are open to heterosexuals, lesbians and gay men alike. Nor does the Human Rights Act 1993, because our antidiscrimination laws include heterosexuals as well as lesbians and gay men under that legislation. It's amusing that Lewis finds time to rant like this. I would have thought he'd be busy doing the hard yakka needed to get Destiny New Zealand up to one percent in opinion polls. It can't even attain those lofty heights. So, who's the 'extreme minority' again, Rich?
