As students are now begining or returning to their studies, LGBT student groups around New Zealand are gearing up for another busy year of activities. Auckland Psychology, Criminology and Law student – and one of GayNZ.com's roving photographers – Nemo Craig became Auckland University's UniQ President last week at their first meeting for 2009. "We provide an environment where queer university students can meet and socialise with other queer students," Craig explains. Along with other social events during the year, the group meets each Thursday evening for coffees on K'Road. "In the past, we haven't been affiliated with many other groups in the community but as the new president, I would like to build a relationship so that we may work together in the future," adds Craig. Wellington Movies, pizza and laughs are on the agenda at the Capital's UniQ branch. Based at Victoria University, the group meets fortnightly on Thursday evenings during term time. Their fun-filled events include movie-nights, pot-lucks, tea-parties and BBQ's, along with a couple of Dance Parties and other special events throughout the year. Their first meeting of the year took place last week, when new co-presidents Rachael and Bobby were elected. The meeting had a bit of star power – well-known bisexual singer Amanda Palmer from The Dresden Dolls, who was in town on her concert tour, joined them for a gossip! Christchurch UniQ Canterbury started 2009 with a very clear goal – to help produce Christchurch's biggest and best yet Pride Week for this May. Several events are in the planning stages, including Ice Skating, a Pool Night, Speed Dating, a Quiz Night, a Fancy Dress Party and Ten Pin Bowling. Along with Pride Week each year, the group holds a weekly Queer Lunch in the Uni of Canterbury's Union Building. They recently shared coming out stories and food at a friendly get-together, and are this week designing badges to sell as a fundraising venture. "UniQ is a social and support group for past and present students and staff at the University of Canterbury. It doesn't matter if you're gay, straight, bisexual, transgendered, Takatapui - everyone is welcome," say the Chch UniQ crew. What are you waiting for? There are many more UniQ groups - nearby almost everywhere there are tertiary institutions in New Zealand. Join the one nearest you and get more out of your student life.
