Tina Turner once sang 'we don't need another Hero', but does Auckland's LGBT community agree? This year we had Pride, but could a Hero rise again? Following a successful Pride '09 Festival last month, the Hero Festival committee is holding a public meeting soon, which it says is "to decide Hero's future." The meeting, which will take place in the NZ AIDS Foundation's HQ in Ponsonby from 6pm to 8pm on Monday 30 March, will be chaired by the Hero Trustees and the NZAF. "It is important that the community have a full and frank discussion on the future of Hero," says the committee in an announcement today. The meeting is expected to focus on ideas for the name and format of Auckland LGBT Festival in 2010, hear feedback on this year's Pride '09 Festival and Hero Party, decide on the future of the Hero Trust, and encourage more volunteers to help plan upcoming events. Now with only two active members, the Hero Trust was not strong enough to organise Auckland's annual Hero Festival for 2009, so a collection of concerned LGBT community stalwarts came forward to arrange last month's Pride '09 Festival at short notice. All interested people are welcome to attend the public meeting. Please RSVP to robert.street@nzaf.org.nz by 3pm Friday 27 March.
