Truth newspaper starts a gay page

Long-running weekly tabloid NZ Truth has launched a regular gay page, called Tongue 'n' Cheek. First seen near the centre of the latest issue, the page is mostly contains sex ads - in keeping with the tone of the rest of the paper. The gay page in the 5 March issue also contains a story about Wellington's upcoming Queen of the Whole Universe show. Started in the early days of the twentieth century, the Truth newspaper has a nasty pre-law reform history of 'outing' New Zealanders who had homosexual encounters, calling their acts "putrid and perverted pleasures". Under new management in the last two years, the Truth has begun to feature stories about LGBT people in a more positive light, including interviewing drag queen legend Carmen about the opening of K' Road's Naval
