Wellington hopeful for Out in the Square

Fri 27 Feb 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Update: Due to worsening weather forecasts, this event has now been postponed until Sunday 1 March, in Civic Square if sunny, or in Garden Club on Dixon Street if rain continues. The Out Wellington team say they're super excited about tomorrow's Out in the Square fair day in central Wellington - but since the MetService has predicted rain, they realise the popular event may have to happen on Sunday instead. Fair day: Last year's Out in the Square "We reckon the weather is going to be just perfect, but just in case we have to postpone the fair to Sunday, we'll let y'all know," says organiser Virginia Hopkins-Burns. The annual LGBT community event in the Civic Square will again feature live performances, drag shows, speeches from supportive MPs, community group stalls, and a variety of food available. "Out in the Square will be packed with stalls selling art, trinkets, gorgeous food, and sumputous wine," says Hopkins-Burns. "The Iko Iko Handbag Hurl will make its welcome return, and there are lots of raffles and spot prizes to win." Last year's Out in the Square was fine until mid-afternoon, when a few drops of rain turned into showers. Scores of people still stayed for the final 'We are Family' show, before the event wrapped up slightly earlier than the planned time of 4pm. Tomorrow's event is planned to begin at 10am, and run through until 5pm. If bad weather means it's postponed until Sunday, GayNZ.com will report the announcement as soon as possible tomorrow morning. A clip from NZ Idol winner Rosita Vai's performance of the Alicia Keys classic No One at last year's Out in the Square is shown below.
