"Coming out hurt my career" - Rupert Everett

Sat 21 Feb 2009 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Actor Rupert Everett claims that his sexuality and coming out has prevented him from becoming a bigger star in Hollywood. Gay best friend: Rupert Everett "I wanted to be a movie star," he tells the New York Times magazine. "I had a difficult set of circumstances to deal with, particularly for a movie career. "Being gay, really. It just doesn't work." Everett came out as gay in 1989, and is perhaps best known for playing Julia Robert's gay best friend in 1997's My Best Friend's Wedding. He has written that he was turned down to play opposite Sharon Stone in the sequel to Basic Instinct after an MGM executive told his agent that "to all intents and purposes, a homosexual was a pervert in the eyes of America." His memoir, called Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins, was published in 2006. Since then, Everett has been working on a screenplay of the last three years of Oscar Wilde's life, a part he says he would like to play in the future.
