Spain: Armed forces now take Trans recruits

Sun 15 Feb 2009 In: International News

Following a long publicised battle by a 28-year-old transgender male, the Spanish army says it will reform legislation to allow trans people to serve in the armed forces. The man, named only as 'Aitor GR', was born female but had a mastectomy and hormone treatment several years ago as part of his gender reassignment. He is currently on a waiting list for an operation which would reshape his genitals into a penis. Although the Spanish Army recruits both genders, Aitor GR was previously turned away from the Army because he was legally a man but declared medically unfit to serve due to his lack of male genitalia.
