She's Jewish. She's a lesbian. She's the new Batwoman - coming to DC Comics this July in the States - and the first few pages of her comic book resurrection have now been revealed. Out magazine is excited: "Batwoman will be the highest profile gay superhero to ever grace the pages of DC Comics," their culture reviewer enthuses. DC Comics Senior Vice President Dan DiDio says the decision to resurrect Batwoman was about expanding the comic franchise's universe with characters representing greater diversity. "We wanted to have a cast that is much more reflective of today's society and even today's fanbase," he explains. "One of the reasons we made her gay is that, again when you have the Batman Family - a series of characters that aren't super-powered and inhabit the same circle and the same city - you really want to have a point of difference. It was really important to me to make sure every character felt unique." The new Batwoman - a 'lipstick' lesbian - will have the same name as the original, Kathy Kane, who premiered in 1956 and was killed off in 1979.
