Welly's Bluenote becomes 'The Fringe Bar'

Wellington's gay-friendly Bluenote Bar on Cuba Street has been rebranded in time for the upcoming Fringe Festival, and will now become the city's first dedicated comedy venue. Now called The Fringe Bar, the venue is booked wall-to-wall with comedy shows during the Fringe Festival and will host the International Comedy Festival in May. Pre-booked comedy will take priority up to 11pm at nights each weekday and then the bar will move into nightclub mode with the traditional karaoke and DJ sounds until 6am closing weekdays, 830am weekends. Bluenote Bar management has in recent years stepped up to host LGBT party nights at times when the capital has lacked a gay bar or nightclub, and has had regular karaoke nights with local drag queens.
