The first global search for 'Mr. Gay World' is taking place this week in a Canadian mountain resort - and there's a New Zealander in the running for the title. Mr. Gay World hopeful: Reece Karena Kiwi-born Reece Karena, who has been based in Sydney in recent years, has arrived in the Whistler resort in British Colombia, where the weather has been snowy and icy cold. The 29-year-old graphic designer says: "I participate to represent the modern gay man and be a strong role model for younger gay men - someone who is proud, healthy, educated and career minded with a strong direction in life. "I do not, in any way, see myself as a gay superhero, but more as someone that a lot of young gay men can relate to, and see that they needn't be anything other than themselves, at their best, to succeed in life." The new Mr. Gay World event, taking place as part of GayWhistler's Winter PRIDE Festival, features 24 men from around the globe. Organisers say they are aiming to find a gay ambassador who will speak out for equality on the global stage. Beginning today, the men will vie for the title with a week of various indoor and outdoor events to help a panel of judges identify "a strong leader that will inspire those around him and fight for equality of all humans." Along with 'physical tests', the contestants will be judged on being a role model, leader, effective communication, compassion, and a willingness to try new things and meet new people. The remaining points are reserved for how well the delegate looks after himself, his personal style and attitude. The winner of the competition will receive the opportunity to travel to various countries to help support or mentor local Pride Festivals and other LGBT organisations. In keeping with his Kiwi heritage, Reece Karena will appear on stage in a Maori-inspired costume.
