Suburbs beckon Sydney Mardi Gras

Sun 1 Feb 2009 In: International News View at Wayback

For 31 years, Sydney's Mardi Gras Parade has rolled down Oxford Street in the heart of the city - but the New South Wales Government is now encouraging the event to 'go west' out into the suburbs. Going West? Marching boys at Mardi Gras "There's also a massive gay and lesbian population out west … We're looking to expand Mardi Gras south, north and west," Mardi Gras general manager Anna McInerney told the Sydney Morning Herald. The Government would like the Mardi Gras Parade and Party moved west to Homebush Bay, which was the home of the 2000 Olympics. "I've been out there to see it as a venue and to see concerts and the Big Day Out and loved them… the challenge for us is convincing the gay community," admits McInerney.
