Mon 2 Feb 2009 In: Hall of Fame View at Wayback View at NDHA

Shaun DJing as Babes! Babes! Babes! Also known as DJ Babes! Babes! Babes!, a resident at K' Road's Sohomo nights, Shaun has joined the Hero Party line-up for Friday 20 February. A talented musician, he's also in local band Prince Diana. We asked the disc-spinner a little bit about himself. Hi Shaun! We hear you're DJing at this year's Hero Party - what kind of event can punters expect? Loads of music variety, flashy outfits, decadent lighting, fashion shows and general unpretentious debauchery. As a resident DJ at Sohomo and Chelsea Boys, what kinds of music do you love to play? Any artists or DJs you particularly admire? Anything Fun or Funny. Music that makes you want to pose like you're on the red carpet. Loving Bag Raiders and Stikka at the moment. What's your background, and where did you grew up? Dad was a smalltown Bricklayer and Mum an American of Jewish descent. Basically a really good mix of hickdom and sophistication, like drinking Maritinis at Supper Club. I also have a healthy understanding of Dairy Farming thanks to Boarding School in the Waikato. When did you come out as gay, and what was it like for you at the time? Telling Mum was easy, but I needed to guzzle a bottle of wine to gather the courage to tell Dad. As it turns out, he didn't give a crap. I was seventeen and working as a hairdressing apprentice in Wellington with David Bowie hair, so it can't of been much of a surprise. Shaun (centre) with band Prince Diana What do you think are the most pressing issues currently facing the NZ's LGBT community? Over-bleaching one's hair and under-accessorising. Who are your LGBT heroes? Candy Darling, Leigh Bowery and Amanda Lepore. And above all, Anna Nicole Smith. May she Rest In Peace. What's your relationship status? I'm in love with a stripper, In lust for life. What's your biggest fear? Snake-bite, unless in a Cleopatra-esque context. Any books or magazines you're reading and recommending? 1am Magazine is divine, I always get a copy. Am reading Graham Greene's Travels with my Aunt which is about this absurd hashish smoking seventy five year old woman and her sheltered 50 year old nephew. Brilliant. Your favourite movies? Bright Young Things by Stephen Fry, Women in Revolt by Andy Warhol and First Wives Club with Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton. Your favourite websites? www.epaulette.tv, www.cheeseontoast.co.nz and www.thewhalingship.com for music and gig guides, www.boozehagslagfag.blogspot.com (my blog) for gossip. If you could have one wish granted what would it be? That I live forever. What else is coming up in the near future for you? DJing at New Modular Party OK OK at Cassette 9 Saturday 28th February. Recording with my band Prince Diana, and growing my hair long like Stevie Nicks.           GayNZ.com - 2nd February 2009
