Generous GayNZ.com readers gave over $360 to OUTLine NZ LGBT support service at our special preview screening of Milk last night at Auckland's Rialto Cinema. Fundraiser: Sean Penn as Harvey Milk 100 tickets were given away online earlier this month for the free screening of the film in which Sean Penn plays Harvey Milk, who in 1977 was the first openly gay man elected to public office in the United States. "OUTLine NZ would like to extend a big warm thank you to all the people that came out yesterday to view the movie preview," says OUTLine's General Manager Lesley Belcham. "Your generous donations, totaling nearly $400 are greatly appreciated. In these hard economic times it is support like this that helps us continue the work we do for the GLBTT community across New Zealand. We are proud to continue our work in the footsteps of pioneers like Harvey Milk." GayNZ.com Content Manager Jay Bennie says he was pleased to see so many filmgoers give so generously at the screening. "In the recession, it's even more important we all pitch in to help and volunteer for our local LGBT organisations and the valuable work they do. They need us, and we need them." Next Wednesday's screening of Milk - also a fundraiser for OUTLine - has sold out. The film opens in cinemas nationwide on Thursday 5 February.
