Wellington's gay gardening group grows

Tue 20 Jan 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

David Mulholland planted the seed back in November, and now reports that Wellington's new gay gardening group is flourishing this summer. Wellington's GLITTFaB Gardening Group With over 50 people on his emailing list, and lots of ideas for future events, Mulholland says he's pleased to see so many green-fingered folks have taken interest. "Thirteen lovely people attended our launch in December, held in hot and sunny weather in a large private garden in Wainuiomata. Eleven others sent their apologies and said that they would be keen to come to future events and more have expressed an interest in being part of it since," he explains. "Those who attended had a tour of the garden, enjoyed a barbeque with convivial company, wandered in the Rimutaka Forest Park on the boundary of the property, soaked up some sunshine - with some working on their tan - and two even braved the creek for a swim at the end of the day. Everyone said they enjoyed it and were looking forward to the next event." The group is tentatively named Wellington GLITTFaB Gardening Group, reflecting the diversity of the attendees. More women are expected at future events to help balance out genders. Ideas for future events include working on each other's gardens, installing a group garden project on council land, 'guerrilla gardening' in public areas, and guided tours of public gardens. The group's next event is on this Sunday at a group member's garden in Ngaio. For more information about Wellington GLITTFaB Gardening Group, email glittfabgardeners@gardener.com.
