Gay icon Eartha Kitt dies aged 81

Colon cancer has taken the life of American singer, actress, dancer and gay icon Eartha Kitt, aged 81. Eartha Kitt, 1928 - 2008 She famously sang Santa Baby, and died on Christmas Day. A stalwart of the Manhattan cabaret scene, her stellar career he saw her nominated for numerous Tony, Grammy and Emmy awards. Her sultry portrayal of Catwoman in the1960s Batman TV series is also fondly remembered. A champion of equality under the law for gays and lesbians, she told the Windy City Times in 2005: "I feel very close to the gay crowd because we know what it feels like to be rejected."
