Canada: Lesbian teens' high pregnancy risk

Sat 20 Dec 2008 In: International News View at Wayback

A study from Canada has presented a result which seems impossible at first glance – that lesbian youth are at higher risk of pregnancy. According to a study from schools in British Columbia reported in the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality, lesbian and bisexual young women are up to seven times more likely to get pregnant then their straight peers. The strange result could be explained by several factors, including at attempt by LGBT youth to remain in the closet by proving that they are heterosexual to avoid homophobic harassment. "We assume that sexual attraction, sexual behaviour and sexual identity are going to be 100 per cent consistent for people. And that's not the case. Especially not for teenagers," said the study's lead author Elizabeth Saewyc. "So they may know who they're attracted to. They may identify. But they're not necessarily only going to be having sex with their same gender." This story continues on the 365gay.com link below.
