A special screening of Milk – the film story of the life and death of US gay equality advocate Harvey Milk – will raise funds for OUTLine NZ and give Aucklanders a chance to see it just before its nationwide release. Sean Penn as Harvey Milk Sean Penn plays Milk, who was the first openly gay man elected to public office in 1977 in the United States. Unfortunately he become a victim of anti-gay sentiment and received multiple death threats. He spoke often of his ineluctable assassination, even recording a will naming acceptable successors to his seat and containing the famous line: "If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door." The film shows how Milk's supporters went from an attitude of "Look how far we've come" after he was elected, to "Look how far we have to go" after he was murdered and especially after his assassin's virtual acquittal. "Milk is an amazingly inspirational film about individual freedom and sexual expression," says Lesley Belcham of LGBT phone support service OUTLine NZ. On the evening of the official launch of Auckland's Pride 2009 Festival, OUTLine NZ will host the film at the Rialto Cinema in Newmarket on Wednesday 4 February. Film-goers will receive a complimentary glass of wine on arrival. Tickets are $20 – for bookings please phone the office on 09 309 3268 or email promotions@outlinenz.com. Tickets are also available at Marvel Menswear, the Women's Bookshop, Kamo and the OUT! Bookshop. The official trailer for Milk is shown below.
