Brazil: Police hunt serial killer of gay men

Sun 14 Dec 2008 In: International News View at Wayback

Police in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo believe the murders of thirteen men over eighteen months in a suburban park could be the work of a serial killer dubbed the "Rainbow maniac". The victims were all men aged in their 20s to 40s, found dead between July 2007 and August this year in a park known to be a gay cruising ground at night. Twelve had been shot, but one died from blows to the head, reports the local Folha de S Paulo newspaper, which specified that the crimes were only now being considered the work of a homophobic serial killer, after initially being investigated individually as simple acts of homicidal violence, which are not uncommon in Sao Paulo. "We are dealing with a suspect who kills homosexuals, exclusively," said the area's police chief. "In his mind, he's cleaning up the place. He doesn't like, he hates homosexuals. Who is he? We don't know."
