Seven out-and-proud guys are in the running to become Mr. Club Ivy - Wellington's new gay nightclub pageant happening this Saturday night. The audience will choose who takes away the sash, plus a prize package which included a $250 bar tab, $250 clothing voucher for Buck's, CDs from Warner Music, a personal trainer, their picture on the cover of GayNZ.com's glossy Gig Guide, plus magazines, DVDs and toys courtesy of OUT! bookshops. "There will be toplessness, there will be tears, there will be sweat," promises the event's promoter Andy Boreham. Starting from 9pm, the entrants will get questions on each of three rounds, which are Open Wear, Swimwear and Clubwear. "We've come up with a novel way of giving people votes," Boreham explains. You don't automatically get to vote – you only get a voting slip each time you buy a drink. Buy 5 drinks, get 5 votes. There is no cover-charge for the event, and Club Ivy has a special 5:30am license for the night. Another fun pageant – called Wellington's Next Top Drag Queen – is planned at Club Ivy in January.
