Paris: Drag robbers snatch jewels

Mon 8 Dec 2008 In: International News View at Wayback

A group of men wearing women's clothes and wigs held up a Paris store and made off with over 80 million Euros (NZ$194,000,000) worth of fine jewelry, in one of the biggest jewel heists in history. The team of three or four men entered the store on Friday and threatened about 15 employees with handguns, hitting some on the head before taking almost every jewel from the display cases at a store near Paris's main shopping street the Champs-Elysees, said a police official. "This is certainly a record," said Doron Levy, a spokesperson for the French union of jewelers. "It exceeds anything we've seen here going back years." French media have dubbed the crime "the steal of the century."
