Gay man's killer sentenced for 2nd murder

Fri 5 Dec 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A former skinhead who is serving a life sentence in prison for the 1999 Westport murder of a gay man has today received a life sentence for another murder. Hayden McKenzie was a white supremacist who said he "didn't like faggots" and had 'Die Nigger Die' tattooed on his forehead. He and a fellow 'Forth Reich' member strangled and drowned James Bamborough – a 54-year-old gay man after a party in Westport in October 1999. He was found guilty of the murder in 2005. McKenzie, now 31, then murdered Korean backpacker Jae [jay] Kim on the West Coast in 2003, and later pleaded guilty. In today's sentencing Justice Simon France said both killings were hate crimes, as the victims were killed because of their ethnicity or sexuality.
