An Iraqi journalist has been jailed for writing a story about homosexuality for a weekly news publication. The article – which details the physical effects of male-to-male sex – violated Iraq's decency laws, reports the BBC. Adel Hussein has been sentenced to six months' jail by a court in Irbil, capital of the Kurdish-ruled region of northern Iraq. "We are astonished to learn that a press case has been tried under the criminal code," said a statement from the Reporters Without Borders group. "What was the point of adopting – and then liberalizing – a press code in the Kurdistan region if people who contribute to the news media are still be tried under more repressive laws."
