UK cop fired over anti-gay emails

Thu 27 Nov 2008 In: International News View at Wayback

A Norfolk Police Constable who sent emails to colleagues condemning homosexuality and advising gay people to seek the help of a Christian group that would 'cure' them has been dismissed. Graham Cogman took issue with the Police Force's support for gay equality, and after receiving an email about Gay History Month, sent emails around containing biblical quotes and information about the "ex-gay" movement. Deputy Chief Constable Ian Learmonth says an internal investigation found Cogman guilty of not treating a co-worker with respect and tolerance. "This officer's behaviour fell well below what we expect of our people," he said. "We require an absolute commitment from all our staff to treat colleagues with politeness, tolerance and respect, regardless of their beliefs, race, age, gender or sexual orientation."
