Small African nation makes gays illegal

Wed 26 Nov 2008 In: International News

The Parliament of the small country of Burundi in Eastern Africa has criminalized homosexuality. The legislation – which makes homosexual activity punishable with two years' jail – has passed in the Lower House and is now expected to be approved by the senate. Pro-gay groups in the nation are expressing outrage, and stressing that the legislation will set the fight against HIV/AIDS back decades. The Association for the Respect of Homosexuals' Rights say they are outraged by the decision to criminalise homosexuality. "We don't understand how educated people can adopt such a law because homosexuality is neither a disease nor a deviance," an official told AFP. Two-thirds of African nations maintain criminal penalties for homosexual activity. More on this story is on the links below.
