Colourful gay pageants return to Wellington

Thu 20 Nov 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Reacting to an absence of pageant-style events in Wellington since Imerst nightclub closed last year, two new gay and drag pageants are planned at Club Ivy over the next few months. Mr. Club Ivy in December will be the search for a guy who is gay, proud, and a possible role-model for gay youth; and Wellington's Next Top Dragqueen in January will be a take-off of the popular TV show America's Next Top Model. Both events are being organised and hosted by Aaron Halliwell and Andy Boreham, the hosts of Wellington's new LGBT radio show CampFM. "We really felt that Wellington had been lacking in GLBT pageants," says Boreham. "We thought it was high time there was some more colour and competition and Club Ivy offers the perfect venue for that." The winner of each event will take away some fabulous prizes, says Halliwell. "Plus they'll carry the title, which isn't as easy as it sounds. "Both title-holders will have certain responsibilities over the year, like appearing at events like Out in the Square and pride week." Anyone interested in entering Mr. Club Ivy or Wellington's Next Top Dragqueen should contact the organisers by emailing campfm@aaronandandy.com, or ask for details at Club Ivy.
