NZ Election 2008 voting closes

Sat 8 Nov 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News

Polling stations closed at 7pm, and the results are starting to trickle in, with just over 2% of the ballots counted so far in an election which promises to be a close call between Labour and National. Similarly to last election, National is taking an early lead, taking almost half the votes counted so far. A recent self-selected and unscientific poll of 361 GayNZ.com readers indicated that 60% favour the Labour Party to lead New Zealand's next Government. 23% favoured the National Party, 19% would Party vote Green, while the ACT Party attracted 4%. However the poll seems to reflect the views of many in the glbt communities. Discussions with gay men in various Auckland venues last week showed the majority favoured a Labour, rather than National led government. As tonight progresses, GayNZ.com will bring you regular updates on New Zealand's Election results, confirm which LGBT candidates will become MPs, and provide commentary on how the election outcome might influence LGBT Kiwis.
