Jools Topp gets arty for animal charity

Thu 30 Oct 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News

The Topp Twins are much-loved as guitar-playing and yodeling entertainers, but it's Jools Topp's artistic talent which will be in the spotlight this weekend, in aid of a charity which defends animals against cruelty. Art for animals' sake: Jools Topp's artwork for auction An original artwork by Topp will be auctioned off on Saturday (1 November) evening at Save Animals From Exploitation's fifth annual charity auction, hosted by Auckland's SOCA Gallery. The out lesbian entertainer says she's proud to be a long-time supporter of the national animal advocacy organisation, which is currently campaigning against the inhumane treatment of factory farmed pigs and chickens in New Zealand. The auction, called A Bid For Freedom, will be hosted by TV host Jaquie Brown, and will feature over forty works by some of New Zealand's most renowned artists. The works come from a diverse range of high profile and emerging artists who include Karl Maughan, Fiona Pardington, Mike Petre, Jim Speers, Angela Singer, Peter Gibson-Smith, Andrew McLeod and Peter Madden. Footrot Flat's kiwi icon Murray Ball, has given an original artwork, along with fellow cartoonists BroTown and Hicksville's Dylan Horricks. The celebrated artist Ted Dutch, who sadly passed away earlier this year, has also donated a piece to SAFE's auction which is expected to be highly sought after. "We are delighted to have the support of so many generous New Zealand artists," says event organiser Amanda Sorrenson. "We have works from painters, jewellers, ceramicists, photographers, designers, cartoon-artists, musicians, print makers and sculptors! All of them moved by the desire to see an end to the cruelty endured by factory-farmed animals here in NZ." For more information and to preview the artworks in the auction, visit the link below.
