Blue-eyed Hollywood star Paul Newman, who broke hearts all around the world as a leading man in the '50's and '60's – and in later life was known for his philanthropy – has lost a long battle with cancer, aged 83. Paul Newman His charismatic performances in classic movies like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Long Hot Summer established him as a rebellious sex symbol. His acting career spanned several decades, then his Newman's Own salad dressings were a huge hit – with all the profits going to charity. Newman was happy to go on the record as being a supporter of LGBT equality. He once said: "I'm a supporter of gay rights. And not a closet supporter either. From the time I was a kid, I have never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community. "There are so many qualities that make up a human being... by the time I get through with all the things that I really admire about people, what they do with their private parts is probably so low on the list that it is irrelevant." The San Francisco Chronicle has a tribute to Paul Newman on the link below.
