India may finally legalise gay sex

Sun 21 Sep 2008 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

This week India may finally scrap a 148-year-old law which criminalises gay sex, LGBT equality activists hope. The Times of India reports that the government will discuss the subject in the Delhi High Court this Thursday. It has taken almost a decade of intense debate to get the anti-gay law scheduled for discussion. Health groups in India say that a change in the law would mean a great leap forward would be possible in targeted HIV prevention, while gay equality groups say the long delay in repealing the law is "criminal". Homosexuality in India has long been a taboo subject, but recent depictions and discussions of same-sex relationships in media and Bollywood movies has led to a shift in attitudes. The Indian cities of Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore have a vibrant gay nightlife, which include dance parties, bars and nightclubs.
