A vitamin entrepreneur who persuaded South African AIDS patients to stop taking their prescribed medication in favour of his pills which he said would 'cure AIDS' has dropped a libel action against the UK's Guardian newspaper. The newspaper exposed Matthias Rath's vitamins as 'toxic and dangerous', and accused him of endangering thousands of lives. Rath has now dropped his year-long libel action – which the newspaper's editor says was designed to "discourage other journalists from looking too closely at his dubious claims and methods" – and must pay legal costs.
