For those who couldn't take their same sex partner to their High School Ball, UniQ in Wellington is staging a High School Prom Ball in two weeks' time as an opportunity to fill the gap. UniQ has staged two previous balls, in October 2006 and August 2007. "Many queer youth don't attend their own school balls or can't take a partner of the same sex as they may not be out or the schools may frown upon it," says UniQ Victoria activities coordinator Justin Cureen-Harris. "This year's Ball is especially topical given the recent reports of some schools forcing students to sign a declaration of their sexuality if they want to take a same-sex partner to their school ball." "We're inviting queer people and their friends of all ages to come," says Cureen-Harris, "High School Prom is open to everyone, young and old." UniQ is promising a "glamorous night" with DJ Helix (The Gathering, Twisted, Leviathan) playing classic gay anthems and some slow jams for those wanting to get a bit romantic. And one of Wellington's high profile drag divas will be performing, but the Ball organizers are keeping her identity wraps. A Prom Queen will be chosen on the night too. "We weren't sure how to award that as we expect there to be boy and girl, boy and boy, girl and girl couples," laughs Cureen-Garris, "so we decided that there'll be two prom queens and the gender of them can be fluid! Or we may just have Best Frock and Best Pants!" Sponsorship by the NZ AIDS Foundation has kept the admission price of the Ball, "which includes a delicious all-you-can-eat buffet" to $25 for students and $35 for others. A strictly limited number of door sales will be available for $40. High School Prom James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor The Terrace 8 pm, Saturday 13 September 2008 $25/$35 from Cosmic Corner/VUWSA
