Chch's gay history to screen in Wgn and Akl

Sat 23 Aug 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News

An entertaining documentary film telling stories of Christchurch's LGBT community through the years will be screened in Wellington and Auckland next month. Reel Queer will screen Through Rainbow Coloured Glasses, by Cantabrian filmmakers Toni Keevil and Meshell Edgecombe, in both cities on Tuesday 16 September. The film premièred in May at Christchurch Pride Week. The filmmakers describe their documentary, which focuses on the local queer community's development, celebrations and struggle for rights over the last 50 years, as "hard-hitting, deeply honest, embracing and at times hysterical. We glimpse the scope of the human struggle and celebration that encapsulates how a community is defined and ultimately defines itself." Simon Fulton, programmer for Reel Queer, says the documentary "is the most interesting and engaging documentary dealing with our local queer history that we've screened to date. Many of the gay, lesbian and transgender people who feature in the documentary will be well-known to people across New Zealand." Proceeds from the screenings will go towards Reel Queer's fundraising efforts for Out Takes 2009: A Reel Queer Film Festival in the three main centres. A complimentary drink and nibbles for filmgoers at the Wellington screening are being sponsored by Wellington Gay Welfare Group. Through Rainbow Coloured Glasses screens on Tuesday 16 September in both cities. Tickets will be on sale at the venues from Wednesday 27 August. In Wellington, a drink tickets $17.50 adult and $14 concession. In Auckland the film starts at 6.30pm at Academy Cinema, 44 Lorne Street; tickets $15 adult and $11 concession.
