Ohio-born musician JD Samson – a respected 'dykecon' worldwide – is visiting New Zealand this weekend for one-off DJ gigs in Wellington and Auckland. Kiwi visit: JD Samson Androgynous-looking Samson is a member of feminist electropunk band Le Tigre, and is known for everything from making lesbian calendars to sporting a tattoo reading 'Mustache'. In addition to Le Tigre, Samson has collaborated with musicians Peaches, The New England Roses and Junior Senior. She's the co-founder of the conceptual dance group Dykes Can Dance, which she says aims to break the stereotype that lesbians as bad dancers. She also DJs internationally "in order to keep creating a space for queers, feminists, and rad people to dance and smile and hold each other." JD Samson plays along with Berlin-based electro-garage band Stereo Total at Wellington's San Francisco Bath House this Saturday night, and Auckland's Whammy Bar in St. Kevin's Arcade on K' Road this Sunday night.
