Archbishop: Gay unions similar to marriage

Fri 8 Aug 2008 In: International News

In the eyes of God, faithful same sex relationships are "comparable to marriage," according to the Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the world wide Anglican church. Dr Rowan Williams is reported to have made the comment in a letter penned before he became the Archbishop. Williams is said to have gone even further, describing alleged biblical prohibitions on homosexuality as being targeted at "heterosexuals looking for sexual variety in their experience." The Anglican Church's ten-yearly Lambeth Conference has just concluded with ultra-conservative bishops in developing countries still threatening to split the church over the ordination of gay bishops.
