AUS: Lesbian couple lose IVF lawsuit

Fri 25 Jul 2008 In: International News View at Wayback

An Australian lesbian couple have lost a bid to sue their doctor after one of them gave birth to twins rather than one baby following fertility treatment. The women claimed that the obstetrician breached his duty of care when he implanted two embryos instead of just one. They wanted AUS $385,000 (NZ$496,500) in compensation for the cost of raising one of their twin girls. But Canberra Supreme Court Justice Annabelle Bennett has ruled that the Doctor was not negligent and that the couple should pay his costs. The couple's solicitor Thena Kyprianou said her clients were shocked by the court's decision to dismiss the case and would consider an appeal. Publicity surrounding the case had destroyed her clients' privacy, she claimed. More on this story is on the link below.
