Waipouri family relief as teen found guilty

Wed 23 Jul 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

A High Court jury has found Palmerston North teenager Andrew Gilling guilty of the gruesome murder of gay man Stanley Waipouri, reports the Dominion Post. Guilty: Andre Gilling It had taken 16 months, two trials and a ten-hour wait for the final verdict. Family and friends heaved sighs of relief and tears fell silently as the jury returned the verdict about 10pm yesterday. They had retired at 11.25am. "We got him," Waipouri's sister Joan said as she walked out of court. "Oh man, this feels so good. It feels massive." "This is what we wanted - justice. I would have wanted another hung jury rather than have a not guilty verdict." She said there would never be closure as family wanted their brother back but this would allow them to keep on going. Gilling will be sentenced on 12 September. More on this story is on the links below.
